There are charities and causes we get support because they matter to members of our team (like Michael sleeping under the stars to support Action for Children), or because it’s a huge crisis (like our fundraiser last year for Ukraine). Our work with Career Ready is a little different – this is a chance for us to roll up our sleeves and get stuck in. We think it’s an organisation that deserves to be shouted about, so we’re clambering to the roof with a megaphone.
In today’s society, opportunity is anything but equal. Despite the laws, policies and commitments designed to create a level playing field, barriers to the workplace remain for many young people, whatever their potential.
Career Ready is the national social mobility charity, aiming to bring opportunities to young people from disadvantaged backgrounds. They do some incredible work to provide career support and workplace experience by connecting with educational organisations and employers – opening doors to a brighter professional future.
We’ve supported them for many years – the team has been involved in various fundraisers, while Nikola Kelly, our MD, has been a member of their Glasgow advisory board since 2017. We’ve also taken an active role for some young people in the region, offering mentoring and paid placements.
Now, we’re about to embark on the process again, with a two-year programme for seven young people. Anna, Nicholas, Lara, Lewis, Eilis, Freddie and Alasdair will act as mentors for the next 18 months, offering advice, information and support. Then we’ll invite the participants into Be-IT towers for a four-week paid internship, giving them a taste of real-world work environment and responsibilities.
It’s a fascinating and rewarding process for us, but of course it’s all about the young people taking part – hopefully these will be the first steps in a few stellar careers.
