Backend Engineer

Are you a backend engineer who wants to work on genuinely interesting problems, at the cutting edge of AI and data? Our client, a fast-growing, Glasgow-based data and AI software company with ambitious plans — and we're looking for a talented backend engineer to help us build the next generation of their cloud-based platform.

They work with clients ranging from blue chips to start-ups across engineering, finance, healthcare, nuclear and transport — helping them get real value from their data through intelligent, automated tooling. It's complex, meaningful work, and the product they are building is genuinely innovative.

The Role

As a Backend Engineer, you'll be a key contributor in a fast-paced SaaS environment, working across the full product development lifecycle — from concept through to production. You'll collaborate closely with a talented team, tackle complex technical challenges, and have real input into the decisions that shape the product and the business. They primarily use Go/Golang on the backend, but if your background is in another backend language they are happy to support you in making the transition. What matters most is strong engineering fundamentals and a genuine enthusiasm for building great software.

AI-Forward Engineering

We're particularly keen to hear from engineers who are already embracing AI-assisted development tools, or who have a strong interest in getting up to speed with them. Whether you're using Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, OpenAI Codex, or exploring other AI tooling in your day-to-day work, we want to talk to you. They believe engineers who leverage AI tools effectively will be the ones who make the biggest impact — and we want people who share that mindset.

Essential Skills & Experience

• Strong backend development skills — we use Go/Golang but will support you if you come from another language
• Experience with relational databases (PostgreSQL), including writing and optimising complex SQL queries
• Knowledge of distributed systems and building and supporting REST APIs
• Experience with containerisation (Docker/Kubernetes)
• Ability to drive a feature from concept to production across the full development lifecycle
• Strong communication skills — able to clearly articulate complex technical challenges and proposed solutions
• A collaborative, team-oriented approach with the ability to help drive consensus

Things That Will Make You Stand Out

• Active use of AI development tools such as Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, or OpenAI Codex — or a keen interest to adopt them
• Knowledge of Kubernetes
• Understanding of JavaScript/TypeScript and frontend technologies
• Experience with Python for data processing
• Experience building and maintaining test frameworks
• Previous experience in a start-up or scale-up environment, helping to build and grow a product

Senior Full stack Developer / Tech Lead (Java & React)

As a Principal Engineer / Tech Lead, you'll work with cutting‑edge technologies, collaborate across multidisciplinary teams, and contribute to the development of scalable, cloud‑ready applications.

What You will do in the Principal / Teal Lead role

• Design, develop, and maintain robust, scalable backend services using Java, Spring, Hibernate, and related technologies.
• Define database structures, write efficient SQL queries, and ensure best‑practice data management.
• Build complex, high‑performing frontend applications using React and modern UI patterns.
• Integrate frontend and backend components through RESTful APIs, ensuring seamless interaction and performance.
• Conduct code reviews and uphold high standards for code quality, performance, and security.
• Use GitHub for version control and contribute to CI/CD pipelines supporting automated builds, testing, and deployments.
• Work with cloud and container technologies; AWS experience is a strong advantage.
• Leverage emerging AI technologies.
• Collaborate with cross‑functional teams, including developers, product managers, and domain experts, to deliver high‑quality software solutions.
• Participate in Agile ceremonies including sprint planning, stand‑ups, and retrospectives.

 

What we require to progress candidates for the Principal / Tech Lead opportunity

• 7+ years of professional experience with Java and React, with a proven track record of delivering successful projects.
• Strong expertise in full‑stack Web development, including object‑oriented programming, design patterns, and data structures.
• Deep understanding of scalable system architecture and modern development best practices.
• Ability to solve complex problems with creativity, ownership, and critical thinking.
• Strong collaboration and communication skills with a proactive, positive approach.
• Ability to act as a technical leader in a fast‑moving environment, (prior start-up / scale‑up experience is highly desired)
• Ability to learn quickly and understand complex business requirements with minimal guidance.
• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Engineering, or equivalent experience.
• Have practical experience or personal passions to engage further with AI experience of Anthropic / OpenAI is a strong plus
