Remote-first (UK) | Occasional travel to office | £90,000 - £110,000 + benefits
I'm working with a fast-growing SaaS business to find a Software Development Manager for their engineering team. This is a genuinely hands-on leadership role: you'll own the performance and development of a section of the engineering department, while staying close enough to the code to challenge quality and drive pace. They use agentic AI as a genuine accelerator and you'll be leading teams where 80% of the code is AI generated.
It's a great fit for someone with a strong development background who has moved into management and wants a role where technical credibility still matters day to day. You'll be working across a modern stack - NestJS/Node.js, Vue, Redis, SQL Server and SingleStore - with a team that takes clean code and DevOps practice seriously.
What you'll be doing
- Setting, monitoring and evaluating performance metrics for your developers, owning the standard of what the team ships.
- Providing hands-on feedback and coaching, helping developers work through challenges and hit their goals.
- Line managing a section of the engineering department - 1:1s, performance reviews, career development, the lot.
- Identifying training needs and organising or delivering learning solutions for your team.
- Supporting recruitment: identifying talent needs, sitting in on interviews, and helping select people who fit the team's culture.
- Driving retention initiatives to keep your strongest people engaged and motivated.
- Championing continuous improvement - retrospectives, process fixes, and staying on top of industry trends worth adopting.
- Building a high-trust, high-collaboration engineering culture, and role-modelling the company's values.
What we're looking for
- Significant experience in a SaaS environment, shipping software fast and cleanly - SOLID principles, design patterns, and the ability to build that competency in others.
- A track record of monitoring engineering performance and driving continuous improvement.
- Strong general aptitude for programming and problem-solving - comfortable picking up new tools and techniques quickly.
- Significant hands-on engineering experience with mature DevOps practices, and the skills to still get into the code when it counts.
- A solid understanding of what it takes to build and run maintainable systems at scale.
- Experience with automated testing and quality assurance.
- A genuine enthusiasm for secure systems and security best practice.
- Experience leading teams that build complex or distributed systems.
- Excellent interpersonal and collaboration skills.
- A Computer Science (or related) degree from a strong university, ideally with strong academic performance or distinction.
What's on offer
- A role with a fast-growing UK SaaS company, remote-first, with occasional travel to their offices
- Competitive salary and benefits package.
- A strong, values-led culture built around a genuine "One Team" and growth mindset.
- Volunteer days, fundraisers and charity events — a company that gives back to the wider community.
